If you’ve ever used a device that seemed to lose power faster than it should, or had a battery that “remembered” a shorter runtime after a partial charge, you’ve probably experienced the quirks of older battery tech.
Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries solve a lot of those problems. They’re not the newest chemistry on the market, but for a wide range of applications, they’re still one of the most practical choices.
What makes Ni-MH different
Unlike some older rechargeables, Ni-MH doesn’t suffer from significant “memory effect.” You can charge it before it’s fully drained without permanently reducing its capacity. That makes it a good fit for devices that get used sporadically—like cordless phones, medical equipment, or emergency lighting.
They also deliver consistent voltage during discharge, so tools and devices don’t slow down as the battery runs low. And compared to single-use alkaline, they pay for themselves quickly if you’re cycling them regularly.
When we recommend Ni-MH

Everyday household devices – remotes, flashlights, wireless mice, kids’ toys. Ni-MH handles partial charges well and lasts for years with basic care.

Power tools & vacuums – many cordless tools still run on Ni-MH packs. They tolerate high-drain applications and can be recharged hundreds of times without noticeable fade.

Emergency & medical equipment – devices that sit on a charger most of the time need batteries that won’t degrade from being constantly topped up. Ni-MH does that reliably.

RC models & toys – stable discharge and good cycle life make them a favorite for hobbyists who don’t want to replace packs every season.
What it’s not ideal for
Ni-MH has limits. Energy density is lower than lithium, so for very compact, high-capacity needs, Li-ion might be a better fit. Also, self-discharge is higher than lithium—though low-self-discharge (LSD) variants hold a charge for months when sitting on a shelf.
So if you need ultra-lightweight or extremely high energy density, Ni-MH probably isn’t the first choice. But for reliability, safety, and straightforward charging, it’s a proven workhorse.
